ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cult following

Imagine you really like a toy, let's call it "Teddy". You like Teddy so much that you want to play with it all the time, you want to tell all your friends about it, and you want to collect everything that has Teddy on it. That's how a "cult following" works.

But instead of a toy, it could be a TV show, a celebrity, a book, a movie, or anything else that people really love. These things might not be very popular with everyone, but the people who do love them are very passionate and loyal.

They might even start dressing like the characters from the TV show, or getting tattoos of the book's symbols. They might have big gatherings or conventions where they all get together and celebrate how much they love the thing. They might even go as far as to create fan fiction or artwork surrounding the thing.

Not everyone understands why these people love these things so much, but that doesn't matter to the cult followers. They feel like they've found something special and important to them, and they just really love it.
