ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Culvert

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a big pile of dirt and on one side of the pile there is a river flowing. If you want to go to the other side of the pile, you have two options: you can either go all the way around the pile, which takes a lot of time and energy, or you can go through the pile, which is faster and easier. A culvert is like a tunnel that helps people and things cross under the pile of dirt and the river.

Just like how you crawl through a tunnel to get to the other side, water, animals, and cars can all pass through a culvert. It is usually made of concrete, steel, or plastic and is placed under a road, railroad, or path. When there is heavy rain, the water can go into the culvert instead of flooding the road or path.

Culverts can be small or big depending on the size of the pile of dirt and the amount of water that needs to pass through it. They help make traveling easier and safer and protect the environment from being damaged by floods.
