ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Customary international law

Customary international law is like a big game that everyone in the world plays, where they all agree on certain rules even if they don’t sign a paper saying they will. Just like when playing your favorite games with your friends, you all have rules you agree on to make the game fun and fair.

So, customary international law is like those rules everyone agrees on around the world, and they help make sure countries get along with each other and don’t start fights.

For example, even when two countries don’t sign an official agreement, they still know they shouldn’t invade each other’s land without permission. That’s because it’s a “rule” everyone has agreed on in this game.

These rules are built over time based on what countries have always done, so it’s kind of like a tradition. Just like how your family might have certain traditions around holidays, countries have traditions about how they should behave toward each other.

This “game” is really important because countries need to get along to make sure that people all over the world can be safe and happy. By agreeing to play by these rules, everyone can work together and focus on making the world a better place!
