Danegeld

Danegeld was a type of tax that was paid to Viking raiders in ancient times. The Vikings were a group of people who lived in Northern Europe, and they would often raid villages, taking whatever they wanted. To stop the raids, people in the villages paid the Vikings a tax, called Danegeld. The money was used to convince the Vikings to stop their raids, and was seen as a way to protect the villagers from being attacked.
