ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Day shapes

Day shapes are like special signs that boats use to communicate with each other during the daytime. They are used to show other boats what kind of ship you are, what you're doing, and where you're going.

For example, a boat that is anchored will use a ball shape to let other boats know that they are not moving. A boat that is towing something behind it will use a diamond shape to show that they are towing. A boat that is fishing will use a cone shape to let other boats know to keep a safe distance.

All boats are required to use the proper day shape depending on their situation so that other boats can understand what they are doing and avoid collisions. By using day shapes, boats can stay safe and avoid accidents while they are out on the water.
