Deinstitutionalization is when people who have been living in institutional settings (such as hospitals, prisons, or nursing homes where they get care, like hospitals) are moved to other places to live such as in their own homes. It's a way of helping people become more independent and self-sufficient by providing them with the support, resources, and opportunities they need to be successful. For example, a person who is living in a nursing home may be given the chance to move into their own home with help for things like cooking, cleaning, shopping, and personal care. This type of living allows people to become more empowered and in control of their lives.
