A designed experiment is where you plan and carry out an experiment with a clear purpose and planned procedures. For example, if you wanted to figure out which type of fertilizer is the best for growing plants, you could do a designed experiment. You'd plan out what kind of plants to use, how much fertilizer to use for each type, what kind of soil and other conditions the experiment would happen in, and then you'd actually carry out the experiment and measure the results. After that, you would look at which types of fertilizer gave the best results and then you would know which type works the best.
