A diffusion pump is like a big vacuum cleaner that sucks up air and other stuff we don't want in certain places. It's really good at getting out all the small bits and pieces that other vacuums might not be able to clean up.
The diffusion pump works by heating up oil inside of a tube. When the oil gets hot, it turns into a vapor, and the vapor sucks up all the air and stuff we don't want. The vapor goes into another chamber, where it cools down and turns back into oil, and all the air and stuff we don't want gets stuck in the chamber where we don't want it.
Scientists and engineers use diffusion pumps to keep their experiments and equipment really clean, so they can get the best results possible. They work super well, but they can be a little tricky to use, so it's important to be careful!
