ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Disk (mathematics)

A disk is like a really flat ball or frisbee. It's a shape that's perfectly round and completely flat, like a pancake.

Imagine you have a circle drawn on a piece of paper. That circle is like the outline of a disk. Now, imagine that circle is filled in with color or some other material, so it becomes a solid shape.

We use math to talk about disks a lot because they help us understand things like how much space something takes up, or how much surface area it has. We can measure the diameter (how wide it is across) and the radius (half of the diameter), and use those numbers to figure out things like the area of the disk or the distance around the edge (called the circumference).

Disks can be found in many places in the world around us, like in CDs or DVDs, coins, and even some types of food (like pizza!). Understanding how disks work and how to measure them helps us make sense of these things in our everyday lives.
