ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Double-barrelled name

Ok kiddo, so you know how we all have a name that our parents give us when we're born, like your name is Timmy? Well, some people have two names, but not just like a first name and a middle name. They have what's called a double-barrelled name, which means two names that are hyphenated together.

So let's say a lady's name is Missy Smith, but when she gets married, she decides to also include her husband's last name, which is Johnson. So instead of just being Missy Smith, she becomes Missy Smith-Johnson.

This way, she gets to keep her original last name and add her husband's last name too. It's kind of like putting both names together so everyone knows that she's a part of both families.

But not everyone has a double-barrelled name, and that's okay too. It's just a preference, like how some people like vanilla ice cream and some people like chocolate. Everyone is different, and that's what makes the world fun!
