ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dress codes

Dress codes are like rules that tell you what kinds of clothes you can and can't wear. Just like when you have to follow rules at school, dress codes are rules you need to follow when you’re at a special place like school, work, or a fancy event.

For example, one dress code might say that you have to wear nice clothes like a dress or a suit to a wedding. Another dress code might say that you can’t wear clothes that show too much skin at school, like a tank top or really short shorts.

Dress codes help make sure that everyone looks nice and appropriate for the occasion. They can also keep people safe, like making sure that people are wearing sturdy shoes if they're working in a construction site or factory.

But sometimes dress codes can be confusing or not fair. Some people might not be able to afford fancy clothes for special events, or they might feel like certain dress codes don't let them express who they are. In those cases, it’s important to talk to someone in charge and try to find a solution that works for everyone.
