ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Drowning

Drowning is when you go under the water and can't breathe in air anymore. When you breathe, you usually take air in through your nose or mouth and it goes down into your lungs so you can live. But when you're underwater, you can't breathe in air and your lungs might fill with water instead.

Water can be really heavy and push down on your body, and it can be hard to move your arms and legs or your head. This can also make it tough to call out for help if you need it.

If you're in the water and you feel like you can't keep yourself above it, or you're trying to get back up to the surface and can't, it's important to stay calm and try to call for help right away. If you're a grown-up, you can help someone who's drowning by getting them out of the water as soon as you can.

It's also important for kids to always be around a grown-up when playing near water, like in a pool or at the beach, so that they stay safe and avoid drowning. Remember, water can be lots of fun when we're safe and smart with it!
