ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Earthing system

Okay, imagine you're playing with your toy car and it's running on a track. The car needs power to move, just like how appliances in our houses need electricity to work. Now, imagine the track is the earth - the ground we walk on.

The earthing system is like a special wire that connects the track (earth) to the car (appliance). This wire helps to make sure that if something goes wrong and the car (appliance) gets too much power, it doesn't explode or catch fire.

So, why does this happen? Well, sometimes too much electricity can build up in appliances or wires. This can happen if there's a problem with the electricity supply or if the appliance isn't working properly.

The earthing system is like a safety net that catches this extra electricity and sends it back into the earth (the track). This stops the electricity from building up in one place and causing problems.

So, when we say an appliance is 'earthed', it means it has that special wire connecting it to the ground. This keeps us safe by making sure any extra electricity goes where it's meant to go (into the earth) instead of causing harm to us or our homes.
