ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Educational inequality

Alright, so imagine you and your friend are both in the same class at school. Your teacher gives you both the same homework and the same test to take. However, when the test results come in, you get an A and your friend gets a C. This is because you were able to understand the lessons better than your friend.

Now, let's say that your friend comes from a family that doesn't have as much money as your family. Because of this, your friend isn't able to afford a tutor, a quiet study space, or any other resources that could help improve their understanding of the subject. This can make it harder for your friend to compete with you academically, even though you are both equally smart.

This is what we call educational inequality. It means that some students have an advantage in school because of their family's wealth, while others have a disadvantage because they don't have the same resources.

Educational inequality is a big problem because it means that some kids don't get a fair chance to do well in school. This can affect their future opportunities, like getting into college, and ultimately their career paths. It's important that schools and communities work to provide equal resources for all students, so that everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
