ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Effigy

Ok, so let's say you have a favorite toy or stuffed animal that you really love and take everywhere with you. Imagine if someone took that toy and made a fake version of it that looks just like it, but instead of being cute and cuddly, it looks scary or mean. That fake toy is an effigy.

Now let's think about people instead of toys. Sometimes when people are angry with someone or want to protest something they don't like, they might make an effigy of that person or thing. They might use materials like straw or paper to create a figure that looks like the person or thing they are upset with, and might dress it up like the person too. Then they might burn or destroy the effigy to show how angry or upset they are.

So effigies are basically fake versions of things or people that are made to represent something negative or upsetting. But it's important to remember that even though effigies might be used to show anger or protest, it's not okay to actually hurt real people or things. We should always try to use our words and actions in a kind and respectful way, even if we don't agree with someone or something.
