Okay kiddo, imagine you are trying to ride your bike up a really steep hill. You have to put in a lot of effort to pedal and get up the hill. The same thing happens with sailboats!
Instead of pedals, sails catch the wind and make the boat move. But sometimes the wind isn't blowing directly behind the boat, so the sail has to be angled just right to catch the wind and make the boat move forward.
Now here's where effort comes in. The sail is connected to ropes called lines, which the sailors use to adjust the angle of the sail. If the sail isn't angled correctly, the boat won't move as fast or might even stop moving altogether.
So the sailors have to put in a lot of effort to pull and adjust these lines to make sure the sail is catching the wind just right. It's kind of like when you have to put in a lot of effort to pedal your bike up the hill. But if the sailors work hard and get the sail angle just right, the boat will move faster and it will be easier to steer.
And that's a simple explanation of effort on sail!
