ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eight-hour day

The eight-hour day means that people who work for a living should only work for eight hours a day. This is because working for too long can be tiring and bad for your health.

It's like how when you play with your toys for too long, you get tired and your muscles can get sore. So, it's really important for grown-ups to take breaks and rest so they can keep working for a long time without getting too tired.

A long time ago, people used to work for much longer than eight hours a day, even up to 12 or 16 hours a day! That's like playing with your toys all day and never taking a break. It was really hard for people, and some people got sick or hurt from working for so long.

But then, people started to realize that working for shorter hours could be better for everyone. So, they made a rule that people could only work for eight hours a day. This meant that everyone could have more time for themselves and their families, and they could still get their work done without getting too tired.

Now, most grown-ups have jobs where they only have to work for eight hours a day. And that's a really good thing, because they can take care of themselves and their families, and they don't have to worry about getting too tired or sick from working too much!
