ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electric glow discharge

Imagine you have a really special toy that has a secret power. When you push a button, electricity starts flowing through it and makes it light up! But sometimes, if you push that button really hard or for a long time, something really cool happens. The electricity inside the toy starts to behave in a special way called a "glow discharge."

A glow discharge is like a sparkly, glowing cloud that forms inside the toy. It's made up of really fast-moving particles and it can be different colors like purple, blue, green, or yellow. You might have seen something similar if you've ever seen a glow stick at night!

The reason the glow discharge happens is because the electricity is getting so strong that it's starting to break apart the molecules inside the toy. This creates a bunch of free-floating particles called "ions" and "electrons." They move around really fast and bump into other particles, making them glow with energy. It's like a big party happening inside the toy!

But don't worry, the glow discharge doesn't hurt the toy or you. It's actually pretty normal for certain toys and gadgets to have this happen when you use them a lot. And it's really cool to watch!
