ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electric violin

An electric violin is like a regular violin, but instead of making sound by using a bow to vibrate the strings, it uses electronics to amplify and modify the sounds created by the strings. This means you can play the violin really loud without having to use a big speaker or amplifier. It also means you can make different sounds that you can't make with a regular violin, like using effects pedals to make it sound like a guitar or add echo or distortion to the sound.

The way it works is that the violin has a special pickup that sits under the strings. When you play the violin, the vibrations from the strings are picked up by the pickup and sent through a cable to an amplifier. The amplifier makes the sound louder and lets you make changes to the sound using knobs and buttons on the amp or on effects pedals.

Electric violins come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. Some look like regular violins with a special pickup added, but others have a more futuristic design with a sleeker shape and unique features like LED lights. They're great for playing in a band or a concert where you need to be heard over other instruments, and they're also easier to practice quietly at home since you can plug in headphones and only hear the sounds you make.
