ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Emission spectrum

Imagine you have a special flashlight. This flashlight doesn't give off just any kind of light, but only a certain type. It works kind of like your eyes when you see different colors, but instead of seeing the colors, the flashlight gives off only certain colors. These colors are called the "emission spectrum" of the flashlight.

Just like the flashlight, other things can give off an emission spectrum too, like gases. When you heat up a gas, it can produce its own special emission spectrum. This is because each type of gas has its own unique set of colors that it can give off. Scientists can use special tools called spectrometers to look at these colors and figure out what gas they are coming from.

In summary, an emission spectrum is just a special set of colors that something can give off when it is heated up or excited. This is really useful for scientists who want to study different kinds of matter and figure out what they are made of.
