Emotional labor is the work it takes to manage your emotions in order to do something. It means you are carefully controlling your feelings in order to complete a task, or make someone else feel better. For example, if you want to cheer up a friend who is feeling sad, you might have to act really cheerful, even if you don't actually feel cheerful. So you are doing emotional labor to make your friend feel better. Another example might be if you need to answer the phone at work, but you're having a bad day. You would do emotional labor in order to make sure you don't sound angry or unhappy when you talk to the customer.
