ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Engineer's blue

Imagine you have a piece of metal that you want to make sure is the right shape and size. You need something to show you where you need to remove metal and where you don't. This is where engineer's blue comes in!

Engineer's blue is a special kind of ink that has a bright blue color. You can put this ink on the metal you're working with, and it will stick to the high spots and edges of the metal. This makes it easy to see exactly where you need to remove material to get the shape you want.

To use engineer's blue, you first need to clean the metal very well. Then you can apply the ink with a small brush or roller. You only need a thin layer of ink to get it to work.

Next, you take a piece of paper or cloth and press it onto the metal. The ink will transfer onto the paper or cloth, leaving behind a bright blue print of the metal surface.

Now you can see exactly where the high spots and edges are on the metal. You can use this information to file, grind, or cut away any material that's in the way. Once you've removed enough material, you can apply the ink again to see if it's shaped correctly this time.

Engineer's blue is very useful for making sure parts fit together correctly, and for checking the accuracy of measurements. It's an essential tool for many different kinds of engineering work!
