ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Engineering geology

Engineering geology is the study of the rocks and soils that make up the Earth, and how they can affect people and buildings. Engineering geologists work to make sure that roads, bridges, buildings, and other structures are built safely. They look at the soils, water, and rocks around a construction site and make recommendations about how to construct a building that won't be damaged by changes in the Earth. They also help determine where an earthquake might occur and how to design buildings that won't be too badly damaged if an earthquake does happen.
