ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Epithelium

Epithelium is like the skin that covers the inside and outside parts of your body. It's like a wall that keeps your insides in and the bad things out. It's made up of tiny cells that are tightly packed together. Just like the bricks that make up a wall.

Epithelium has many different jobs in the body. Some help with absorbing nutrients, like the ones in your intestines. Others help to protect your body from germs and bacteria, like the ones in your nose and lungs. There are also some that secrete things like hormones and mucus.

Some parts of your body have thick epithelium, like the bottom of your feet, while others have very thin epithelium, like the inside of your cheeks. But no matter where it is in the body, it's an important part of keeping us healthy and safe.
