ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Epsilon-induction

Imagine you have a big pile of toys, but you can only play with some of them because they all look different. You really want to play with all of them, but you don't know how to do it. That's where epsilon-induction comes in!

Epsilon-induction is like a magic spell that helps you see that all the toys in the pile are actually the same type of toy, just in different colors and sizes. This means you can use the same rules to play with all of them!

In real life, epsilon-induction is a way of proving that a statement is true for all natural numbers. For example, let's say you want to prove that the statement "all birds can fly" is true. You know that birds come in many different shapes and sizes, so it's not enough to just look at a few birds and say that they can fly.

Instead, you can use epsilon-induction to show that if the statement is true for a certain "base case" (like the bird called a penguin, which can't fly), and if it's true for any bird that is very similar to the one before it (like a sparrow, which is similar to a robin), then it must be true for all birds!

So epsilon-induction helps us see that even though things might look different on the surface, they all have something in common and can be treated the same way. And that's pretty cool!
