Erotic art in Pompeii and Herculaneum

Hello there! You know when we have art we like to draw or paint things that we find beautiful or interesting. People did the same thing a long time ago in a place called Pompeii and Herculaneum. They lived in these places a really long time ago, like way before your grandma was even born!

Some of the art they made was a bit different from what we usually see today. It was called “erotic art”. You might be wondering what that means, well sometimes when people are in love, or feeling romantic, they like to be close and show their love in many different ways. Sometimes people like to draw or paint images of naked people or couples hugging, kissing or doing other stuff that makes them feel really happy and in love.

So, the people in Pompeii and Herculaneum drew pictures of these things too. They drew pictures of people doing things like kissing, hugging, and even having sex! It’s just like when you see the kissing scenes in your favorite movies, but drawn on walls instead of on TV screens.

But this kind of art wasn’t allowed in some places during that time. To keep it private, people would paint erotic art inside their home, so only they could see it. Some of the art might even have been used as a way of telling people where to go to find someone who was looking for love, a bit like a secret code.

Although the art might look a bit different than what we are used to now, it was still a way for people to express themselves and show their love for one another. And today, we can still see and learn about this kind of art and what it tells us about love and life in the past.
