ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

European migrant crisis

Okay kiddo, so imagine you live in a big house with your family and your neighbors. One day, a lot of people from outside your neighborhood come to your house because they don't have a place to live, and they need help.

This is kind of what happened in Europe a few years ago. Many people from countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan had to leave their homes because of war, violence, and persecution. They had to leave everything behind and look for a safer place to live, like your house in the neighborhood.

But some big countries in Europe, like Germany and Sweden, said they would accept these people and let them live there. And because they had no other option, many families decided to make a very dangerous journey to get there.

This journey is called migration, and it can be very scary and hard. Some families have to cross seas in small boats, and some have to walk for many days without food or water.

When these people arrived in Europe, they didn't have a place to live, and they needed help from the countries that said they would accept them. But not all countries were happy to take these people in, and some even closed their borders, which means they wouldn't let anyone in.

This caused a big problem because there were so many people who needed help, and some countries didn't want to help. It was like if you had a lot of friends coming to your house for a sleepover, but some of your neighbors didn't want them there, and they blocked your door so your friends couldn't come in.

This is why it's called a migrant crisis because there were so many people who needed help, and not everyone was willing to help them. It was a very hard time for these families who had to leave their homes, and it's important to remember that they are just like you and me, but they had to go through some very tough times.
