Evolutionary arms race

So, imagine you and your friend are playing tag. You tag your friend and they say "oh you got me!" but then they come up with a new rule that they can't be tagged on their shirt. So you try to reach for their pants, but then they make another rule that they can't be tagged below the knees.

This is kind of like what happens in an evolutionary arms race between animals. Let's say there's a predator that likes to eat a certain type of animal. The animal that is being eaten might start to evolve traits that make it harder to catch, like being faster or having spiky fur.

But then the predator might evolve traits that help them catch the animal, like getting faster or developing sharper claws. And then the animal being eaten might develop new traits again, like being able to camouflage or having thicker skin.

So it's like a constant game of "tag" where each side is trying to get better and better so they can survive and pass on their genes to their offspring. It can happen between plants, animals, or even between species of bacteria. And it's a big reason why we have so many different types of living things on Earth today!
