Ex-situ conservation is a way for us to help protect animals, plants, and other living things. It is a way of saving species that are in danger of becoming extinct. Ex-situ means “off-site,” so this kind of conservation happens in a special place away from a species’ natural habitat. We do this by keeping animals and plants in zoos, aquariums, and other facilities where they are safe and can be studied. By taking care of things in ex-situ facilities, we help protect them from becoming extinct and can also learn more about them.
