ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Exciton

So, you know how when you play with toys, you can make them move and do stuff? Well, there are some things in the world that act kind of like toys and can move around and interact with other things.

One of these things is called an exciton. It's like a tiny little toy, made up of two parts: an electron (which is a part of an atom, the tiny building blocks of everything in the world) and a hole (which is kind of like a space where an electron is missing).

When the electron and the hole get close to each other, they start to interact and play with each other's energy. This interaction creates something called an exciton, which is like a little ball of energy that can travel through materials like plastics, glass, or even some kinds of biological tissues.

Scientists study excitons to learn more about how energy moves through materials and how different things can affect how excitons behave. It's kind of like studying how different toys work and how they can move around and play with each other.
