ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Experiment

An experiment is like when you play pretend with your toys and you want to see what happens when you do different things with them. Just like when you try pouring water on sand or stacking blocks in different ways to see what happens.

Scientists use experiments to see what happens when they change something called a variable. A variable can be anything that changes like adding more water, turning up the heat or using a different toy.

Scientists set up the experiment by creating a plan, just like how you make a plan when you play pretend. They choose what they want to test, how they will test it, and what they expect to happen.

Then comes the fun part, scientists start to perform the experiment by changing the variable and seeing what happens. They take notes and watch very closely. Just like how you like to watch your toys and see what happens when you do different things with them.

Once the experiment is over, scientists take time to look over their notes and then decide what they have learned. Sometimes they may discover something brand new, or they may discover something they didn’t expect to happen. And that is how experiments help us learn about the world around us, by testing and seeing what happens.
