ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Extract

When we use the word "extract," it means when we take something out of something else. Just like when we take out our toys from the toy box to play with them, we are "extracting" the toys from the toy box.

In science, extracting means taking a specific substance from a mixture of different things. For example, if we have a cup of chocolate chips mixed with nuts, we can use a strainer to separate the chocolate chips from the nuts. This process is called "extracting" the chocolate chips from the mixture. We have taken only the chocolate chips out of the mixture, leaving the nuts behind.

In cooking, extracting means getting certain flavors and chemicals out of food. For example, when we make tea, we put tea leaves in hot water to let the flavor "extract" from the leaves. This means that the hot water is taking flavor from the tea leaves and making it taste like tea.

Overall, "extracting" means taking something out of somewhere, whether it's a substance from a mixture, a flavor from food, or anything else.
