ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Faraday effect

The Faraday effect is a phenomenon that happens when light travels through a material with magnetic properties. When this happens, the magnetic field changes the direction of the light, making it turn to one side or the other. This is like turning a paddle wheel in water. The paddle wheel will move in the direction that the water is flowing. The Faraday effect works the same way, but with light instead of the paddle wheel in water.
