ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fire-adapted communities

Have you ever seen a big, scary fire in the forest or near your house? It's really important to be prepared for fires like these, especially if you live in an area where fires are common. That's why some communities work really hard to be what we call "fire-adapted".

Being fire-adapted means making sure that people and homes are safe even when there's a fire nearby. It's kind of like putting on a superhero suit to protect yourself from danger.

One way to be fire-adapted is to make sure that your home and yard are "defensible". That means that there's a space between your house and the forest or other vegetation that's cleared of anything that could catch fire, like branches, dry leaves, or dead trees. This can help stop a fire from spreading to your house.

Another way to be fire-adapted is to learn about what to do if a fire is coming. You might need to evacuate (which means leave your home) to a safer place. Or, sometimes firefighters will tell you to shelter in place (which means stay inside your home and close all the windows and doors to keep the smoke out).

Communities that are fire-adapted also work together to make sure that everyone is safe. They might have meetings to talk about what to do in case of a fire, or have special programs to help people learn about fire safety.

By being fire-adapted, we can all help protect ourselves and our communities from the danger of fires.
