Flagpole annexation

Hello there! Flagpole annexation is when a city or town wants to take control of a piece of land, but that land isn't connected to the rest of the city or town. It's called "flagpole" because the piece of land usually looks like a flag on a pole, with a long, skinny part (the pole) that connects to a larger piece of land (the flag).

So let's say you have a big farm outside of a town. That town might want to annex (or take control of) a small part of your farm, but that small part doesn't touch the rest of the town. Instead, it's connected to the town by a long, skinny strip of land, like a flagpole. That's flagpole annexation!

Why would a town or city want to do this? Well, sometimes it's because there's something valuable on that piece of land. Maybe it's a big factory that could provide jobs for people in the town. Or maybe there's a lot of natural resources, like oil or trees or water. Other times, the town might want to provide services to people who live on that land, like police and fire protection or trash pickup.

So, flagpole annexation is just a fancy way of saying that a town is expanding its borders to take control of a piece of land that isn't connected to the rest of the town. It's kinda like when you build with Legos and you make a long, skinny piece that sticks out from your creation - that's your "flagpole" piece, connecting your creation to the rest of your Lego world.
