ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flight test engineer

Have you ever been in an airplane? When they build a new airplane or change something on an old one, they need to test it before they let people fly in it. A flight test engineer is a person who does this testing.

The flight test engineer is very smart and knows a lot about math, science, and engineering. They work with the people who designed the new airplane or the changes to the old one. They make sure that everything works the way it's supposed to in the air.

Before the airplane takes off, the flight test engineer checks everything inside the airplane to make sure it's safe. They test the engines, the brakes, the landing gear, the wings, and many other things. They even make sure that the toilets work!

The flight test engineer also makes sure that the airplane is balanced when it is in the air. Just like a see-saw at a playground, the airplane needs to be balanced so it flies straight and doesn't tip over.

When the airplane takes off, the flight test engineer is inside the airplane. They have special instruments and gadgets that tell them if everything is working correctly. They watch the airplane go up and down, left and right, and make lots of notes about what is happening.

After the flight, the flight test engineer looks at all their notes and tells the designers if everything worked well or if they need to change something. Sometimes they will have to test the airplane many times before it is ready for people to fly in.

So, the flight test engineer is like a safety inspector for airplanes. They make sure everything is working and safe. Without them, we wouldn't be able to fly around safely in airplanes!
