ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Floodplain

A floodplain is like a big blanket of land that is very flat and sits next to a river or stream. When it rains a lot, the river or stream can fill up with too much water that can't all fit inside it. This extra water ends up spilling out onto the floodplain, like a big puddle.

Floodplains are really important because they can help protect nearby towns from flooding. When the extra water spreads out onto the flat floodplain, it slows down and doesn't rush too quickly towards towns and houses. This gives people time to prepare and move out of the way of the floodwaters.

But, floodplains can also be dangerous if people build houses or buildings on them. Since floodplains are designed to flood, if people build on them, their homes can get destroyed by the flood waters. So, it’s important to keep floodplains clear of homes and buildings and only use them for activities that won’t get ruined by floods, like growing crops or playing sports.
