Okay kiddo, have you ever gone fishing and wondered how the fish get caught by the hook? Well, a big part of that is the fly that sits on top of the hook. A fly is a little imitation bug that looks like the real thing that connects to the fishing line.
Fly tying is the art of making these tiny bugs that fishermen use to catch fish. Just like you make a picture by sticking different colored papers and shapes together, you use different materials like feathers, yarn, thread, and fur to make these bugs.
You start by putting a hook on a special tool called a vise that holds it in place. Then, you take a piece of thread and tightly wrap it around the hook, just like you wrap a ribbon around a present. This thread is what the materials will stick to, so you want it to be nice and tight so that the fly won't fall apart when it's in the water.
Next, you add on the different materials to make the body, wings, and tail of the fly. For example, you can use soft feathers for the wings and fur for the body. You'll need to be very careful when you're adding these materials to the hook to make sure that they stay in place and look like a real bug.
Finally, you add on a little bit of glue to hold everything together and snip off any excess materials. And just like that, you've made your very own fly!
Fishermen use all different kinds of flies when they go fishing, and the type of fly they use depends on what kind of fish they are trying to catch and what kind of water they're fishing in. But no matter what kind of fly they use, it all starts with fly tying.
