ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Food processing

Food processing is when you take some food and change it into something else that people can eat. For example, when you bake flour and sugar together, you get cookies. When you mix milk, sugar, and cream together, you get ice cream.

Sometimes, food processing just involves cutting up the food, like when you dice an onion. Other times, it might involve adding things to the food, like when you put salt on a piece of chicken before you cook it.

Sometimes, food needs to be processed in order to make sure it's safe to eat. For example, if you catch a fish in a river, it might have harmful bacteria in it that could make you sick. To make the fish safe, you would need to cook it, smoke it, or freeze it.

Food processing can also help make food last longer. For example, if you can fruits and vegetables, they will last a lot longer than if you just leave them out on the counter. Or, if you add preservatives to food, it can stay fresh for months or even years.

There are lots of different ways to process food, and some ways are better than others. For example, some people think that processing food too much can make it less healthy. But, if you do it right, food processing can be a great way to make sure you have lots of safe and tasty food to eat!
