Imagine you and your family go to the supermarket to buy food to eat. But where did that food come from before it got to the supermarket? It came from a food system, which is like a big network of people and businesses that work together to produce, distribute and sell food.
The food system starts with farmers who grow crops and raise animals. They use things like seeds, soil, water and sunlight to make the food grow. Once the food is grown, it gets harvested and then transported to factories and processing plants where it’s turned into things like bread, cereal, and cheese.
After that, the food is packaged and transported to places like supermarkets, grocery stores or restaurants where it’s sold to people like you! People who work at these places are part of the food system too, because they help package and sell the food.
But the food system doesn’t stop there - it also includes waste management and recycling services. After the food is eaten, there are leftover parts that need to be thrown away. These leftover parts are collected and taken to places where they can be turned into useful things, like compost to help more food grow.
The food system is important because it provides us with the food we need to eat every day. But we also need to make sure that the food system is sustainable and environmentally-friendly so that we can keep having enough food for everyone to eat in the future.
