ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Formal methods

Formal methods are like neat and tidy ways of solving math problems. It's a lot like if you had to solve a problem like 7+5, you could use your fingers and count from 7 to 12, just like your teacher taught you in Math class. Or, you could use formal methods, which is when you solve problems by using symbols, like writing down 7+5 as 7 + 5 and then figuring out that it equals 12. Formal methods can help mathematicians solve more complex problems than just addition and subtraction. For example, they can help understand complicated equations and solve problems like in geometry.
