Fossil fuel is fuel that comes from the ground. It is made from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Heat and pressure from the Earth turned these plants and animals into what we call fossil fuels. They are types of fuel like coal, oil, and natural gas, and they are all made from the same types of plants and animals from long ago. We use fossil fuels to power our cars, buses, planes, and trains, as well as to heat homes, light up cities, and to power machinery and factories.
