Fourth estate

The Fourth Estate is a term used to describe the press, or news media. It's usually used to emphasize the importance of the press in keeping people informed. Fourth Estate means the press is like one of the three branches of government - like a branch that can help keep the other branches (executive, legislative, judicial) of government honest and accountable. The press helps make sure the government is doing what it should be doing.
