Free Negro

"Free Negro" was a term used to describe a person of African descent who was not enslaved. They were usually allowed to own property, work for wages, and travel freely. Sometimes, these people were allowed to vote and own businesses. People who were "free Negro" usually had to carry special papers or other documents that proved they were free.
