ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

French peasants

Okay, imagine yourself as a little farmer living in France a really long time ago. You own a small piece of land and you work really hard on it, growing crops and raising animals. But there are some people who own more land and have more money. These people are called the aristocracy.

Now, the aristocracy doesn't work with their own hands like you do. Instead, they let other people work for them in exchange for protection and a place to live. These people are called peasants.

Peasants were the poorest people in society. They usually lived in little huts, and they didn’t always have enough to eat. They worked all day in the fields, planting crops, harvesting them, and taking care of the animals.

Sometimes, the aristocracy would make the peasants pay them money or give them some of the things they had grown. This was called a tax. If a peasant didn't pay the tax or did something that the aristocracy didn't like, they would be punished.

However, the French Revolution happened and this meant big changes for the peasants. They rebelled against the aristocracy, demanding more rights and freedoms. The revolutionaries abolished the feudal system and even gave peasants the right to own land themselves.

Today, French peasants are called farmers and most of them own their own land. They work hard to grow fruits, vegetables, and crops that we all enjoy on our plates.
