ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fried rice

Fried rice is like a happy plate of mixed-up rice and other yummy things that are cooked together in a wok or big pan.

First, grown-ups add some oil to the pan and then they heat it up. After that, they add onions and garlic, which are like little pieces of vegetable that give the fried rice flavor.

Once the onions and garlic are looking nice and golden, the grown-ups add other ingredients like chopped-up carrots, peas, and maybe some shrimp or chicken. They cook all this stuff together for a little while until it’s almost done.

Finally, they add some leftover rice to the pan. Leftover rice is rice that didn’t get finished at dinner time and was saved for later. The grown-ups mix everything together so the rice gets coated in oil and all the other good stuff in the pan.

It all gets cooked for a few minutes until it gets crispy and delicious. Then, it’s ready to eat! Yum!
