ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Functional genomics

Functional genomics is a type of science that studies how genes work in living things. Genes are like instructions inside living things that tell them how to look and act, and functional genomics tries to figure out what those instructions are and how they work. To do this, scientists look at the different parts of a gene and how they fit together. They also study how the genes change over time and how they affect the behavior of the living things they are in.
