Gamma probe

A gamma probe is a special tool that helps doctors find things that they can’t see with their eyes, like cancer cells. It works kind of like a metal detector, but instead of finding metal, it finds tiny particles called gamma rays. These gamma rays come from something called a radioactive tracer, which is a special kind of liquid that doctors put into a person's body.

When the radioactive tracer enters the body, it goes right to the area where the doctors are looking for something like a tumor or cancer cells. Then, the gamma probe is used to detect the gamma rays that are given off by the tracer. The probe can find these gamma rays even though they are too small to see with our eyes.

Once the gamma probe finds the gamma rays, it sends a signal to a machine that reads the signal and lets the doctors know where to look. This helps the doctors know exactly where to operate or treat the patient.

Even though it sounds scary, the gamma probe doesn’t hurt and it’s actually very helpful for doctors to find and treat things that could be harmful to our bodies.
