ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Genesis flood narrative

Okay, so imagine you have a big bathtub, and you fill it with water. Now, let's pretend that you have a lot of toys in there, and you want to clean them all at once. So, you put in some soap and start splashing around.

In the Genesis Flood Narrative, it's like that, but instead of just toys, there were a lot of people, animals, and plants in the world. People were not being nice to each other, and they were doing things they weren't supposed to do. So, God decided it was time for a big cleaning.

Just like you used soap to clean your toys, God used a lot of water to clean the Earth. He made it rain and rain and rain for forty days and forty nights. Can you imagine how much water that is?

The water kept rising and rising until it covered the tallest mountains. It was so deep that people and animals couldn't breathe anymore, and everyone drowned, except for Noah and his family. God had told Noah to build a big boat called an ark, and he and his family, along with two of every kind of animal, got inside.

The rain stopped after forty days and forty nights, and the water slowly went down. The ark rested on top of a mountain, and everyone inside came out. They saw a big rainbow in the sky, and it was a sign that God promised never to flood the Earth again.

So, just like when you clean your toys in the bathtub, sometimes God needs to clean the Earth too. But don't worry, he promises never to flood it again.
