ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geology of Mars

Okay, little one, let’s talk about Mars and its rocks. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun, and it’s a lot colder than Earth. There are canyons, volcanoes, and craters on the surface of Mars because it doesn't have active tectonic plates like Earth.

As for the rocks, they tell us about Mars' history. Some rocks tell us that Mars had water on its surface a long time ago. Water made the rocks smooth and round. Other rocks show us that Mars had active volcanoes in the past.

Scientists also look at the color of the rocks to learn more. Different colors mean different minerals. For example, a pink rock might have a lot of iron in it, while a brown rock might have a lot of silicon.

Overall, Mars has a very different geology than Earth, which makes it an exciting planet to study. Scientists are still learning new things about Mars and hope to send people there one day to explore the rocks up close!
